Who we are
Baptist Churches are found in almost every country of the world. Many people followers of Jesus Christ who choose to belong to a Baptist Church.
Baptists believe that wherever a group of Christians meet and promise together to live and work as Christian people there is the church. At Desford we are blessed with a historic building which we use for worship and other events, but the real strength of the church is found in a group of people who trust in Jesus. For Baptists the concepts of family and community are important, the church is not so much a particular place or building, but rather a group of believers, committed to Christ, to each other and to serving God both in the local area and wider world.
The following 5 Core Values endorsed by the Baptist Union of Great Britain describe the characteristics that Baptist Churches like ours are seeking to attain.
We aim to be:
A Prophetic Community
Following Jesus in confronting evil, injustice and hypocrisy. Challenging worldly concepts of power, wealth, status and security.
An Inclusive Community
Following Jesus in overcoming barriers of gender, language, race, class, age and culture. Identifying with those who are rejected, deprived and powerless.
A Sacrificial Community
Following Jesus in accepting vulnerability and the necessity of sacrifice. Seeking to reflect the generous, life-giving nature of God.
A Missionary Community
Following Jesus in demonstrating in word and action God's forgiving and healing love. Calling & enabling people to experience the love of God for themselves.
A Worshipping Community
Following Jesus in engaging in the worship and prayer which inspires all we are and do. Exploring and expressing what it means to live together as the people of God, obeying his Word and following Christ in daily life.
